Quick Gamecube RTC battery fix

Gamecube RTC Battey Replacement - 1 of 3 Gamecube RTC Battey Replacement - 2 of 3 Gamecube RTC Battey Replacement - 3 of 3

When I recently got the Gamecube out of the basement, I didn't think too much of the small brown stain on the front. I realized what it was when I turned on the console, though... the RTC battery had died and started leaking a bit. Fortunately nothing seemed damaged, but the console complained about the system time resetting every time I turned it on.

As the original battery is soldered right to the board, I grabbed some CR2032 batteries and an appropriate solder-in-place battery holder on Amazon. But, when everything arrived, I went to dissasemble the console and discovered that Nintendo uses proprietary screws (go figure), apparently called "GameBits". So, thinking that I could use a nice collection of miscellaneous small repair screwdriver bits, I got a bit kit from IFixIt which included a couple of GameBit sizes (and many others which have already proven useful).

When the bits arrived, taking the case apart was easy, and I proceeded to de-solder the old battery from the board on the inside of the console. The pins for the holder didn't quite line up with the perfboard holes, but with some very slight bending I got them to work satisfactorily and soldered them into place. I then inserted the new battery into the holder, and checked the voltage at the PCB solder pads... 3.3V just as expected.

The next time I fired up the console, it of course asked me to set the time & date again, but since then it has remembered every time. Success! A simple, but still satisfyting fix.
